Moving day runs more smoothly when the practical jobs are handled in advance. Use the weeks before completion to clear decisions rather than leaving everything to the final forty-eight hours.
Preparation and paperwork
Confirm your completion date, keys collection arrangements and any access instructions. Keep solicitor correspondence, mortgage documents and identification together so nothing is misplaced on the day.
Utilities and internet
Arrange electricity, gas, water and broadband transfers early. Take meter readings when you arrive and photograph them for your records. Internet installation appointments often need booking ahead.
Address changes and removals
Update banks, employers, subscriptions and DVLA details. Book removals with enough contingency for delays, and label boxes by room so unloading is quicker once you arrive.
The essentials box
Pack a first-night box with kettle, mugs, chargers, toiletries, bedding, basic tools, cleaning cloths and snacks. It is usually the box you open first — and the one you are most relieved to find.
Final checks
Walk through windows, doors, taps and heating once you have the keys. Note anything that needs follow-up, then give yourself permission to settle in gradually rather than finishing every job on day one.
